DESIGN STUDIO I

BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ARCHITECTURE SEM1 AUGUST 2017

DESIGN STUDIO PROJECT 3 -  DREAM SPACE

For my final assignment, I was assigned to build a dream space that consisted of 2-3 spaces. Space demanded the consideration of anthropometry, ergonomics, narrative, physical and non-physical needs.

My concept is  " REVELATION", which means a surprising and previously unknown fact that has been disclosed. I applied my life-story in my model and focus on the sense of feelings. It was the experience which I had gone through - struggle and relieve. As a sensitive person, I always have complicated feelings towards all the situations I face. When I was young, I found difficulty in expressing my own feelings and it made me felt depressed and struggles. I was afraid to express my real feelings as I scared I will just drive people away. When I grow up, I started to care about my feelings and learn how to work on it. I feel delightful and relieved when I finally find my way out to tell people what I am thinking. I found 3 effective ways to express my feelings - self-review, talk and draw.

In my model, there are 2 blocks, I named them Block S and BIock R, representing struggling and relieve respectively. My model consists 3 spaces which are self-reflecting space, gathering space and drawing space. Self-reflecting is space for me to calm down and self-review, think more about myself. Gathering space is for me to communicate with my friends. When I feel tired, and want to relax, there's a drawing space for me.

In Block S, I use different patterns arrangements of timbers to create the sense of protected. As different walls have different patterns arrangement of timbers, it creates the sense of confusing and struggling under the light. The gap between the timbers produces framing effect, letting people focus on the details which they won't mention usually. A pyramid has shape with a wide base and narrow apex that can be a hideout space for me to calm down and observe the change of light shadows of the day.
There's a transition between these 2 blocks. I use a bridge as the transition to represent me when I am on my way to relieve. There's no railing to show that the transition is hard and tough.
In Block R, there's a space for communication and interaction between people. An opened window is applied to provide natural air-ventilation. It is slanted to provide the specific view of bamboo creating a sense of relaxation inside the bamboo forest and provide inspiration for drawing. When I am tired, I can go upstairs and there's a sky terrace for me to relax and draw. It has the highest altitude in this structure to provide wider visualization while drawing. It is surrounded by bamboo, creating a natural pathway that can clearly observe the sunrise and sunset.
