Assignment 1:
Floating Placemarker
SOUNDSCAPE : RELATION OF LAND AND SEA
It is where the ocean crashes relentlessly against the boundaries of the land, where air interchanges between the atmosphere and liquid water, where ecosystems on land and at sea are bonded in unexpectedly powerful ways, and where life continuously moves with the rhythmic rise and fall of the tides.
The circular boardwalk is built partially in the sea to contribute to the feeling of “walking on water” and still appreciate the sea while standing on land. The circular boardwalk provides a panoramic view, especially during the sunrise and sunset and also encouraged people to have social interaction. The footsteps on wood sound are relaxing too.
The outer core consists of 3 curvature wall; the inner core consists of 2 curvature wall. The core is connected to the boardwalk for entrance. The concentric circulation encourages users to experience around the placemarker. The breeze enters from different directions, relentless gust cuts through the panel and create the howling sound of the wind. The wind then circulates in the structure which is made out of concrete that amplifies the sound waves at some point. The users will be experiencing the relieving wind sounds and calming sea waves.
-
Circular boardwalk is built between the land and sea and represents the image of life where it keeps circulating endlessly. In cultural aspects, Port Dickson has floating population where people coming in and out to work or vacation during weekend.
-
-
The boardwalk is built by timber with gap between each plank to shown that it is a non permanent structure where contrast with the concrete structure, placemarker.
-
-
It was inspired by the shape of conch shell where the large openings on top is to capture the sound of waves and breeze. The body of the structure is an enclosed space to amplify the sound waves
-
-
They seems like a whole structure instead of separated realms. The placemarker doesn’t look like it’s floating by connecting it to the boardwalk with 3 directions.
-
-
The curve wall is designed to capture the wind in a different direction. Different heights of the wall are used to capture wind from different levels

Intersection & Interaction
The intersection of vertical and horizontal planes defines the volume of spaces, providing interaction and interchange between people by linking all the spaces altogether. Spaces are all connected to each other as a whole.
In my placemarker from Project 1, the curvature walls are placed to face different direction to capture the wind to amplify the sound of waves Inspired by that, the volume of this building is built up with vertical and horizontal panel to capture the view at the same time to direct the pedestrian circulation & divide the spaces The planes are arranged in symmetrical where the Spaces are arranged in Spinal organisation it’s linear form but with a lot of branches. From the plan, u can see the walls are arranged in symmetrical form but at the same time the horizontal planes which are the roofs cut thru the walls in different Angles, making the spaces different from each other, because of the pitched roof, the building itself looks more rhythmic and volumetric.
The organisation of the spaces is about the connection between human and water. The angular facade encourages and invites the movement of the visitor, enhancing the grandeur of the entrance. The roofs are slanted and overlapped each other to capture the light into the lobby to welcome the visitor. The building starts with a grand entrance which can capture the wind and terminates with a pool without obstruction, the wind is ventilated well in the building. The different angles and heights of roofs overlapping each other, not only to avoid the rain but also bringing in the light, highlighting the lounge and brighten ppl mood before they start the tour.
The spaces are organised in a way that indicates active and passive of the site. Quite area(mangrove, fishing village); Crowded area(beach, water sport). Activities that provide interaction between people are located at the active site, While the activities that need a quiet environment located at the passive site. There are a gallery, placemarker, cafe and restaurant located at the active site. While the mangrove deck, office and workshop are located at the passive site.
The mangrove deck enhances the natural environment and culture in Port Dickson. It’s like a journey of how mangrove can actually survive at the site. The site itself is the interface between land and sea, the most two contrasting environments on the earth, I feel like it’s very important to conserve the natural context like this at our site, so there’s an educational tour for visitor, to teach ppl the knowledge on mangrove, how it adapts to survive in the harsh space between the tides, for the user experience, the feelings during low tide and high tide are different During high tide ( early morning ) users will be able to observe the relationship between the water and mangrove, how the mangrove reacts in water ; during low ride ( evening) users will be able to observe the relationship between land and mangrove ; how it survives in such muddy condition
There is a center garden linking dry area and wet area, which provide camping and picnic area. The swimming pool differentiated into leisure area and training area. Leisure area includes the dining pool, viewing pool, children pool, adult pool with jacuzzi and bar. While the training area includes the training pool for practice purpose. The community swimming centre provides swimming classes, at the same time, integrate with high school in Port Dickson to promote swimming activities.
The highlight of my community centre is dining pool., I want to create something that attracts ppl to come for swimming and appreciate it, and it might be something that other swimming pool doesn’t have, then It turns out in dining pool, dining pool as in dining in the water, the water level at the other pool is 1.5m but for dining pool is only 30cm, ppl can enjoy food in the water at the same time to have the view towards the blue ocean.
